lyrics

HERMAN WOUK, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Caine Mutiny,” died a few days ago ago at 103. His sweeping novels about World War II, the Holocaust and the creation of Israel made him one of the most popular writers of his generation.

Wouk wanted to know how so many people in Europe and America allowed the Holocaust to happen. He used his novels to look at the various psychological mechanisms and sociopolitical rationalizations that enabled intelligent, generally well-meaning and well-informed individuals to justify or ignore what was right in front of them. People with good intentions, not consciously monstrous, became nonetheless oblivious to cruelty and injustice and these evils were normalized.

We are living in a country where a fascist lover has been elected president. Trump's words are awful. The consequences of his acts can harm people for years to come. Yet, I see the same reasoning described in Wouk's books coming from supposedly educated people, who are fed up with politics in general. Their reaction was to elect and support another politician with the same demagogue and populist ethos that we found in 1930s Germany.
