I started playing the flute 65 years ago, inspired by classical flutists Jean-Pierre Rampal and James Galway.
By the 1960s, Herbie Mann, Yusef Lateef, Eric Dolphy, Hubert Laws and Roland Kirk had all proven that a flute could cut it in front of a jazz band, and they influenced the next crop of rock flutists.
In 1965, mournful flute lines colored The Beatles’ “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” and over the next couple of years, the flute found its way into “Walk Away Renee” by The Left Banke, “Ruby Tuesday” by The Rolling Stones, "California Dreamin'" by The Mamas and The Papas, “Along Comes Mary” by The Association, “Nights in White Satin” by The Moody Blues and several songs on The Beach Boys’ "Pet Sounds" album.
Ian Anderson became famous for elevating the flutist role to full-on rock-star status when Jethro Tull embraced progressive rock in the 70s. And today there is Lizzo.
I have witnessed the seemingly inconspicuous flute make itself a home in the rock and roll hall of fame!

A walking bass is a style of bass accompaniment which creates the feeling of movement - like walking. It is common in Baroque music, jazz, and blues.
In Baroque music (think Bach), it is known as basso continuo or figured bass. The bass line was written out, which gave the harpsichordist or organist room for improvisation. Johann Sebastian Bach was one of the greatest musical improvisers of all time.
There is a direct line from Baroque basso continuo to the walking bass of jazz and blues.
Just keep on walking, man!

The Tango is a dance that originated in the 1880s along the border between Argentina and Uruguay. It has influences from African and European music. The word "tango" was initially used to refer to musical gatherings of slaves, with colonial authorities attempting to ban such gatherings.
The tango was a popular dance among European immigrants, former slaves and the working and lower classes. It came about through the nostalgia and melancholy felt by those who were far from home.
It was known as “music of the immigrants”.
