lyrics

Klezmer is an instrumental musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe that dates back to the 15th century. Ukraine is the cradle of klezmer music.

Klezmer uses elements of many other musical genres including Greek, Romanian and Turkish music, baroque music, German and Slavic folk dances, and religious Jewish music. As the music arrived in the United States, it adopted elements of American big band and popular music.

The 20th century was especially good to Jews, notably in the postwar era, when American Jews thrived in the arts, in business, in the professions, and for the most part antisemitism retreated to the country-club. Perhaps this golden age for American Jews is ending.

Jews may not feel as safe in America in 2024 as in 1960, and if Trump is elected in November, almost anything could happen.
