Ode to George Floyd

from *In Memoriam by Steve Shapiro

/

lyrics

George Floyd, 46, died Monday in Minneapolis, the city he moved to for a better life. His last moments were caught on video. While being arrested, Floyd was held down by a police officer's knee. The video shows Floyd pleading that he is in pain and can't breathe. Then, his eyes shut and the pleas stop. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

This video is like a macabre documentary of current events. Death is too intimate a phenomenon to not be distorted by a mass audience. Yesterday, very few of us knew who George Floyd was, what he cared about, how he lived his life. Today, we know him no better except for the grim way in which he died.
